Compare Samsung Galaxy Note To Motorola Droid Razr
The Motorola Droid Razr and the Samsung Galaxy Note were released almost simultaneously. The Razr seems to have been designed to become one of the slimmest smartphones in the world while the Note is more preoccupied about making available a large touchscreen that makes me think about tablets. If you are interested in discovering if this main difference means that no similarities can be found between these two devices, you should accompany me as I compare the Droid Razr and the Galaxy Note and determine which one of these devices is more suitable for end users.

Let’s start with the design because that’s the first factor that people take into account when shopping for a new smartphone. Some people don’t even take the time to discover the inner capabilities of a device if they find its exterior to be unappealing. From this point of view I can tell you that by releasing the Droid Razr, Motorola has proven that it’s ready to approach a more bold visual style. The Razr comes with tapered edges and sharp angles that help it stand out from the crowd of Android smartphones. The material choice is also desirable, especially the textured Kevlar used for the back panel that’s not only stylish but also extremely durable. All these design details are fascinating, but the one that impresses is the thickness of only 7.1mm that classified the Razr as the slimmest phone in the world for months after its release. On the other hand, the Galaxy Note is the result of a completely different approach. One look is all it takes to realize that Samsung didn’t think about pocket-friendly dimensions and reduced thickness when designing the Note. That’s because it integrated in the design a 5.3-inch display. However, the thickness manages to remain acceptable (9.7mm) as well as the overall weight. At least the back cover is still textured and stylish and accompanied by curved edges. However, on the whole, I think that the one esthetically appealing is the Droid Razr.

It’s now time to take a look at the display. From this point of view the Note is hard to beat because it makes available a large 5.3-inch display with high resolution and high pixel density. In addition, Samsung used the Super AMOLED technology that delivers improved brightness and color scheme as well as power efficiency. So, if you choose the 5.3-inch touchscreen of the Note, the 800 x 1,280 pixel resolution and the 285ppi pixel density, will make sure you enjoy watching movies, browsing the Internet and reading text in excellent conditions. Not to mention that S Pen made available that gives you excellent control over the touchscreen. With this pressure sensitive stylus in hand you will be able to even paint. After reading all those great features, I think that you will find the Droid Razr’s touchscreen slightly disappointing. However, if you don’t mind the “smaller” size of 4.3 inches, you will be as impressed about the resolution and pixel density provided. That’s because the Super AMOLED touchscreen can support a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and delivers a 256ppi pixel density along with Gorilla Glass and accelerometer. So, it seems that the quality of image display is almost identical. That’s why I think that as far as the display goes, the fight between these two smartphones is a draw.

If you are also interested in the storage space that you will find available, you should know that the Razr comes with 16GB of internal memory and support for microSD cards of up to 32GB. On the other hand, the Note comes in a 16GB and a 32GB version and offers additionally the possibility to use SD cards of up to 32GB. Because the Note is more generous, I find it to be the better choice (from this point of view).

The main hardware component, the processor, is as important. Fortunately, both smartphones come with powerful Cortex-A9 dual core processors. However, they are tweaked and setup in different manners. On the one hand, Samsung chose to pair the Note’s processor with a Mail-400MP GPU and to clock it at 1.4GHz. On the other hand, the Razr comes with the Cortex-A9 processor clocked at only 1.2GHz and paired with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. It’s true that both configurations are powerful and will help you experience the lack of delays, but it’s obvious that the more competitive and powerful configuration is delivered by the Note.

When it comes to the operating system, you should know that both devices are Android 2.3 smartphones that are expected to receive the update to Android 4.0. Because the same features and app accessibility is in place, I think it’s fair to call it a draw. The same goes for the camera section, because both devices make available an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of recording 1080p videos and taking 3,264 x 2,448 photos. The only difference is that the front-facing camera of the Note is estimated to have a resolution of 2MP and not 1.2MP like the Droid Razr’s front camera.
